The form of rationalism that Rene Descartes advocated was referred to as Cartesianism. To a great extent it rejected the idea that mere sensation alone would help to establish the validity of the existing reality. He advocated that the path to the attainment of eternal truth can be acquired by way of reason alone and mere empiricism is not sufficient. On the other hand, other forms of knowledge required experience accompanied by the scientific method.
